Both of them I guess, you have to be trained from the earliest stage or you wouldn't suceeded in learning it...

i agree with bluedreamer... it is not so easy to learn it... sometimes, is the way we pronouce the word... same pronuciation but different word... so not so easy to learn it... but if want to learn it, must learn from the beginning...

spunky

actually chinese and taiwanese languages are different, taiwanese language is more like fokkien (something like ppl speak in hokkien but it's totally different from hokkien)

it's same like us here where we sometimes speak canto and english (both languages together at the same time) so it's similar with them where they speak mandarin and fokkien (taiwanese lang) at the sametime

hey, did u know that ming dao can speak a little bit of cantonese not only him, the rest of the groups too.... he speak not bad...

i think that ming dao was given his stage name from someone- it means bright road and the person who gave him the name said that he would go further and succeed better with that name in the industry than his real name..
taiwanese and chinese are very different! i am from taiwan myself but am born in canada- both my chinese and taiwanese is kinda bad since i grew up in canada but i can understand most chinese and speak most and can understand more taiwanese but cant really speak it, i cant really read/write chinese though, only simple characters- you should see ming dao speak taiwanese! so sexy and MAN! ming dao is so shuai! (shuai=good looking in chinese)

well, mandarin quite hard to learn coz sometimes they have the same word but different meaning... so not so easy to learn... i dun think so... if u still wan to learn, maybe u watch movie chinese drama... i dunno cantonese but now i know coz i watch hongkong drama and learn...
fugtub

Re: learn mandrin

i agree. like myself, i can understand mandarin and read a little bit. but not all as nowadays the character in short cut.

but after watching mandarin drama, sitcom or even talk show, you will managed to learn. i even speak like a taiwanese nowadays. too much of MD's shows. i didn't realised it until my fren highlight it to me. but remember also to speak to your fren who can speak and understand mandarin. like that you will practise.

hope this helps...
philladelphia

yess, im agree...

you may learn chinese from watching movies... like listening and speaking ( u may know the grammar or used of appropriate vocabulary) well im indonesian and i learned chn since y7.. then i stopped at y8 until y12 i m truly study chinese in my high school (now) during those 3 years i often watch chinese, pay attention the way ppl speak, then u learn bit by bit.. with the character it's a bit difficult but if you have desire to learn then im sure you will love learning chinese.. you have to love it that's the solution

Well...Mandarin is a tough language but nothing is impossible. I'm too learning Mandarin in one of the local tuition provider. But it doesn't seem to be enough. I'm thinking of pursuing to a better provider. It's quite expensive but I think it's worth it since they are from Shanghai University.

If i'm not mistaken Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The classes is very advance and they teach you systematically. Hopefully by the end of this year i could speak Mandarin fluently. Wish me luck!!

He's got a blog on the Jungiery official website but it's in Chinese. I think all the Jungiery stars have to maintain a blog there.

What I managed to decipher out of what he wrote is that that blog is about HIM and how he likes being him. Not Dang Oh, Not Jun Hao but HIM - MING DAO! LOL! I think he's getting fed up with people identifying him as the Frog Prince!

I'll go back & check again for the link but someone else has gotta translate what he wrote unless you guys are willing to wait for me to translate, which is gonna take awhile cause I'm working & studying at the same time.

I took French as an elective & I found that the pronunciation part was not a problem. The problem for me was conjugation my verbs! LOL! Now I do self-study for Mandarin cause it's much easier for me.

But anyways, the Taylor's College course is a good course so I wish you the best of luck in your studies. Jia you.

Thanks. Same to you too! Maybe if you ever meet MD, then you'll be able to converse fluently with him in Mandarin! LOL! I, on the other hand, will most probably rely on hokkien cause my Mandarin sounds worse than Leon Jay Williams' what with my banana accent!

I've finally enrol to a good language school. Hope to finish my mandarin studies by the end of next year. There's a lot to learn, but best of all being able to speak and write mandarin characters.

I've found a website on Mandarin. www.linese.com
I think it was launch last month...go and check it out. It's totally cool.

I think in the website above under the links column...There's a list of university in china which conducts online mandarin course.
It is also well recognised. There is a HSK if i'm not mistaken...a test on mandarin proficiency.

You can read all about it there. Hope this helps.

I've found a website on Mandarin. www.linese.com
I think it was launch last month...go and check it out. It's totally cool.
You'll learn a lot from there.

wow... wish u good luck...

wow... you gals are great and so dedicated.... i myself must also jia you lor... i'm also doing my own self study mandarin but is difficult and a lot a lot of effort as i need to ask my frens when i dun understand a certain sentence or words. i'm still looking into a good language centre or college to enrol. do not want to get a bad lecturer or lousy one. any1 of you have any recommendation?

lastly, all of us must jia you....

I think in the website above under the links column...There's a list of university in china which conducts online mandarin course.
It is also well recognised. There is a HSK if i'm not mistaken...a test on mandarin proficiency.

You can read all about it there. Hope this helps.

I finally found the blog again. It's actually on the J-Star website but our dear friend over there doesn't seem to understand the function of a blog! All I could find was his first (& last!) blog & nothing more. I'll try to translate it over the week & post what he wrote by this weekend.

Anyways, news about him (for those of you who don't subscribe to AFF): he recently changed his degree major from some industrial something or rather (I was reading a mag but didn't manage to translate everything properly) to (of all things!) something to do with make up & beauty. According to his lecturers/instructors he supposedly has a flair for being a beautician.

There's also talk of him having to go for his National Service stint but because he changed his degree major, that'll most probably be postponed cause it seems that if a person (Taiwanese) is studying for his degree, he can postpone having to go for National Service. And then, of course, MD being MD, the paparazzi have been having a field day saying that he did this on purpose to avoid NS la. But (my 2 cents worth) I don't think that he'd do that seeing as how responsible he is with his family & everything. Not to mention him being so competitive & (dare I say it?) kiasu! Anyways, he doesn't look or sound like the type to back down from a challenge.

Also, he hurt himself in some sort of competition last week & had to get 9 stitches on his chin to cover up the gash. He looked so adorable when he went on stage direct from the hospital & Sam & Jacky were so sweet worrying over him!

Oh yeah, for those of you in Malaysia or Singapore who want back copies of J-Star mag (Last year's Oct, Nov & Dec) issues, I managed to find a few copies. They're going for RM8 to RM9 per copy so if any of you out there want it, give me a PM & I'll try to get it for you. Of course, you'll have to foot the postage fees yourself la! I'm not making any money out of this, so please msg me only you if you're serious about wanting the mags. Also, I have a standing order with Borders for any & every copy of J-Star that they will be importing, which means that as soon as they get new copies, they'll contact me, so if anyone out there wants copies, I'll be posting notices when the mags are available so those who want the mags can always PM me & I'll tell the good people at Borders to reserve however many copies possible for me. Please be informed, though, that Borders won't bring in the latest copies. Only Kinokuniya will in Malaysia. Borders sells the J-Star mags at RM12 per copy & Kinokuniya sells at RM21. I'll most probably be placing a standing order at Kinokuniya too but I might not buy from them b/c of the price (for both the purchase of the mag & the expense of going to get it cause petrol is expensive & parking there is equally expensive too! )
Jean

Heh heh heh! I forgot to give the link to the blog what with my rambling about everything. I've been so busy these days that once I've got a list formed in my mind, I go about that list to the point of forgetting everything else! SO blur!

Anyways, here's the URL for the blog: http://www.j-star.tw/blog/?id=6

If you click to expand what he wrote, the title of the blog is called "Wo He Wo Zi Ji De Dui Hua" Roughly translated, that should mean "Me & My Own Dialogue".

An alternate title for his blog is called "Ming Dao - Xin Qing Gu Shi" roughly translated to mean "Ming Dao - Heart's Story".

The mag is from Taiwan, so it is in Mandarin. But you don't really have to buy it to read it. They have really awesome pictures of all the J-Stars & they also have polls & notices there too. What you can do if you're interested in finding out about the J-Stars is you can join these forums:
1. Asian Fanatics Forum (http://asianfanatics.net/forum/index.php?) - Click on "Taiwanese Entertainment" & then click on either "Taiwanese Males Artists" or Taiwanese Female Artists" before choosing the artist of your choice. Most of the J-Stars have a topic there.

2. Jungiery Stars Forum (http://jstars.iceglow.com/) - As the name of the forum implies, it is all about the Jungiery Stars.

Both of the above forums are in English so you shouldn't have any problems reading. Of course, news about them will be a bit sluggish cause all the good people who post there have to translate the news & all that but it's quite up to date most of the time.

And to reply to your post, Fugtub (is that correct?) the Borders in Malaysia that I'm referring to is the one in Berjaya Times Square. I'm not so sure if the one at the Curve stocks it or not. Earlier this week they had the May issue of the mag but I bought the last one on the shelf . This issue had MD & Sam on the cover & came with Sam's magnet & some other person from Lala. MD's magnet is in July's ed. I haven't had the time to read through it yet but if there are any of you who are interested, maybe we can split the article up & translate it into English for the other members of the forum who don't understand Mandarin. By the way, the October issue of J-Star mag came with a poster of 183 Club & 7 Flowers with quite a nice picture of MD. And there's a cheaper magazine (Bulanan Pelajar) that's going for RM 2.50 - RM 3.50 with MD's poster in it. I think it's in A3 size.

hello!

ah im so jealous of taiwanese--im actually quite confused over it; do taiwanese people speak mandarin/cantonese? why aren't they just chinese, then?

And hello! I'm a newcomer. wat can i say--ming dao is hot and his acting abilities are aahhhhhmazing!

I know this might not be the greatest thing to ask, but I just have to wonder; does anyone else feel that he is a little gay-ish? maybe its just because ive watched way too much stuff on 183 club from youtube, but i noticed he tends to lean his arm on the other guys, or put his hand around them. and then i read about his switching majors...but then it wouldnt make sense, would it? since he did you kno suck lips on that one chick from 7 flowers at their concert (which, btw, was incredibly cool, since im such a fan of prince turned into a frog--like a way out addicted fan here). juuussst wondering; he can be touchy feely all he wants with me! unfortunately i'll probably never get to see him in my life...

hi cutiepopcorn... welcome aboard..

taiwanese are chinese. it's just the dialect they use. mandarin pronounciation is slightly different. just like in china, beijing and shanghai speak diferently in mandarin. or amerian english and british english.. and in taiwan, majority of them understand hokkien dialect which is also different compared to malaysia hokkien..

MD is not gay. he mentioned b4 in cover story that he is like that. he likes to sweet talk holds hands or even lean over... he feels closer... 183 club member did tell him not to do that or else ppl will think they are gay but MD does not care. he is what he is...

you could say that he's fresh.. he's the youngest in 183 club anyway but he is learning and never give up. just like the current game show whereby he slip and had to undergo 9 stitches and immediately went back to the show to do closing... this is what i call showmanship and serious with his work... let's hope he stays the same and never change... :D

well, Ming Dao name was given to him by his boss. actors and actress believe sometimes if they changed their, it would bring good career for them.. (i was told this is the reason they changed their name but i might be wrong)...

Thanks for the info. I think I went to that section but didn't see anything which is why I asked. I too am not that facile with Mandarin. The regular/simple words I understand but most of the time, you'll see me running for my dictionary. I'm really wearing it thin nowadays! It's gotten so bad that I can't be bothered to keep my dictionary away anymore. I put it directly next to my pc so that I can get at it fast all the time.

Welcome cutiepopcorn. To be honest, Taiwanese ARE Chinese. It actually goes back to Chinese history where they have the changes in Dynasties - you know, where Ming became Ching & so on & so forth. So what happened was that one of the displaced Dynasty's emperor's descendants actually got banished (or was it ran away) to this remote "little" island & tried to establish an empire there wherein he could regain power & all that. So it's something like the Americans who left Britain & established their own "kingdom". And up till today, you still see them speaking differently the same as the Americans. I guess it's their need to differentiate themselves from their "enemies' roots".

And about Mind Dao being gay - he's actually straighter than a ruler. The reason why he's touchy-feely is because when he was young he suffered from polio & had to have braces for his legs. So that actually caused him loads of problems getting around & he used to have to depend on his (elder) brother to get around & the habit of touching people developed from there. Also, his touching people is his way of connecting with them the same way we hug our close friends when we meet up with them after a long time. Only MD does this with everyone. In a way, you can say that he has less inhibitions compared to most Asians because of his childhood illness.
Jean

pencilboxx wrote:
coll cool.. why doesn't he just use his real name?

The name Ming Dao was given by Sun Zhong supposedly to help him further his career. The name is supposed to mean "clear road ahead". Cause when he signed up with Jungiery, the first series he did was the King Of Adventure series.

I don't know about other countries but in Malaysia (specifically Penang), there is a type of fortune telling that uses the chinese name of a person. it's something similar to palmistry only the fortune teller reads the client's fortune using his/her name (in chinese character). So what happens is that if the fortune teller finds that the name doesn't suit/give good fortune to the client, what the fortune teller will do is change a stroke or 2 in the client's name to reflect better fortune on the client. In essence, the name remains the same if you pronounce it in English but in chinese the name takes on a whole different meaning. So I guess in effect, that's what Sun Zhong wanted for Ming Dao but in his case, he got a whole new other name.
Jean

pencilboxx wrote:

This link is an interview he did on KXLL with Leon Jay Williams just after the filming of TGDJY. This part specifically gives an explanation on his name both from him & Sun Zhong.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eq5EFKpBkiY

It's in Mandarin with no English subs though. Hope you understand but if you don't, maybe someone can help you translate it. If you can't find anyone, try PMing me & I'll try to help you although it might take me awhile cause I'm always busy .

man, some people do think MD is gay. LMAO. It's hilarious when people think that he is gay. Sorry, I just find it hilariious. MD is straigter than a ruler like someone mention before. ahaha He is so manly, from head to toe and inside/outside out. Touchy doesn't mean you're gay. lol A lot of korean actors are more than what MD is and they're not gay.

I just love MD for who he is. I really do.

I'm the someone la! LOL! Anyways, I think it's about time I introduced myself. :D

I'm Jean & I'm from Malaysia. I teach the piano & am studying for my degree. I got to know of MD from watching PTF, which my colleague lent me & there started my infatuation with all things MD & in the process 183 Club. I'm only 6 months younger than him (to the date!) so it's actually very weird for me cause I don't have infatuations, which should tell you guys how good an actor he is. LOL!
unni

aya, I'm sorry, I was reading through the post but didn't actally pay attention to the name and was lazy to look back. hahaha

Nice to know you, and you're the same age as MD. How nice. I'm like 8 years younger than him. hahhaaa

MD is amazing at acting. I didn't want to watch FP at first but since I didn't have nothing to do so I started watching it but got hook in the first 10 minutes of episode 1.

Hazel77, you're welcome. But I don't quite know for what. Where will you (maybe) go?
Anyways, I too don't have time but I usually make time (about an hour) before I go to sleep & I sleep at around 5 or 6 am instead of 4 every night. I usually get about 3 to 4 hours of sleep during the weekdays & sleep in on Sunday to make up for lost sleep so it works out for me. That way I can keep abreast of stuff. Heh heh heh!

aww poor you.. even i dont sleep 3 to 4 hours a day.
my parent said i hv to get enough sleep no matter what
well that is between 7 to 8 hours and not more! =P
Jean

hazel77 wrote:

I used to think that too but then I found that I had so much to do that I usually can't sleep until I get it done. I have little OCB. Heh heh heh! If I don't get my stuff done before I go to sleep, then I'll be tossing & turning all night instead of sleeping which makes it pointless so I try to finish what I have to before I sleep. At least then when I do go to sleep I fall asleep right away. And I do mean fall asleep right away. I usually turn on some music before I sleep but before the end of the first song, I'm usually in dreamland already! I fall asleep as soon as my head touches the pillow! LOL!

You know, they were discussing something about sleep or the lack of it in a Cover Story interview with 5566. I think Meng Zhe was saying something like Sun Zhong trained the J-Stars to survive on little to no sleep at all. Cause he was saying something like, they'd have a full day filming, practicing, performing, etc. but when they got back to their dorm, Sun Zhong wouldn't let them go to bed. He'd make them stay up & re-hash what happened that day with him & then after that, he'd make them play games or something & wouldn't allow them to go to sleep till something like 3 or 4 am. And then the next day, they'd have to wake up at around 56 or 6 again. So they had to learn to function on little to no sleep or they wouldn't have been able to make it this far. I'm not so sure about the details but I'll try to watch it again & give you guys the full details when I'm able.
Jean

Interestingly enough, MD's real name roughly translated to English means direct rules or trasnlated from there, following the rules! LOL! He does follow rules, doesn't he? So I guess the name his parents gave him suits him very well.
I was doing some translation & on impulse translated his name cause I was feeling bored!
unni

I think SZ is training them good. They have to get used to it. lol But it is like torturing.

I think MD's name match him really well, not because I like him. But his real name, stage name, english name, all match him perfectly. And it's meaning came out nicely.

The training is good for them but in the long-run, there could be bad consequences on their health. That's the only problem with the sleep deprivation thingy.

Cause of the way he likes to hug people & generally stick close to them espcially the 183 Club guys. I think it's mentioned a page or 2 back in this thread.

OMG! haha, that is a first...though i highly doubt MD is gayy..he's like one of the straighter guys! whatever, he likes to hug, so what? that shows he's really nice! i wanna go back to taiwan now...blehh

Unless you're from there, I don't think you want to go back there because of him cause he ain't in town! LOL! Why don't you check out if he's gonna be in Taiwan first before you make any plans? Make sure to tell us, okay? Maybe a group of us will go with you! Just joking.

But anyways, with his tight schedules, it's gonna be hopeless to go Taiwan just to see him at the moment cause last I heard, he's gonna be headed for China soon. Dunno which part though. And then there's also all the promo tours he'll be going on & all sorts of stuff that he'll be doing not to mention having to attend classes. Dang! that guy's busy!

haha, yea, you're right,m i'm from taiwan..haha, it's like we usually go back every summer but not this year so yeahh,

haha, thanks for the tip!
